I feel this also represents Gods overall covering and protection of us in times of need.
The man in the painting is all alone, his need is so desperate he feels like his life is hanging on the edge of a precipice. The only thing left he can do is pray & and he does.
He quietly bows his head in prayer, and cannot fathom that he is worthy of Gods love and protection. How difficult it is to believe in Gods love and care when we dont feel or understand it.
But God isn’t man. He is there for you.
He loves you so very much.
God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
